Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography
ERCP is performed by giving patient medications for sedation. Once the patient is fully sedated, an upper GI endoscope is inserted through his mouth up to the duodenum where opening of bile duct is identified. A minor incision through the opening is done, small instruments and contrast medium are passed inside the bile duct. Through this technique, the obstruction is identified and appropriate interventions are performed. This may include stone extraction or placement of a biliary stone.
